Food Contact Chemicals of Concern (FCCoCL)
Food Contact Chemicals of Concern (FCCoCL)
The harmonized Food Contact Chemicals of Concern List (FCCoCL) was developed by the Single Use Material Decelerator (SUM'D) group,to support supply chain alignment toward the elimination of hazardous chemicals that impact human health and detract from safe and circular material feedstocks. A tiered list is presented to provide users with a starting point as well as a clear pathway to a more precautionary approach to safety. This list is used to inform the Chemicals of Concern metric in the Understanding Packaging (UP) Scorecard, an online resource that measures commonly used foodware and food packaging materials with a single yardstick to offer companies the first-ever, free, and comprehensive tool for making sustainable purchasing decisions.
Tier 1
Chemicals of concern identified by Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). EDF has identified chemicals in food packaging and food handling equipment where the potential health impacts from their migration into food raises serious concerns. These chemicals in virgin materials may also contaminate the recycling stream and undermine their recyclability.
Tier 2
Chemicals of concern identified by the Food Safety Alliance for Packaging (FSAP) brand owners' working group document that have been screened against the Food Packaging Forum's (FPF) Food Contact Chemicals database (FCCdb) for relevance.
Tier 3
Identified as one of the 608 priority chemicals of concern (FPF 608) in the Food Contact Chemical database (FCCdb) developed by the Food Packaging Forum.
