Heterogeneous polyurethane resilient flooring is a type of PVC-free resilient flooring that is factory-cured and supplied to the build site as sheets or tiles. It is designed for a variety of commercial markets including healthcare, offices, education, retail, and hospitality. It may also be used for residential applications. Heterogeneous polyurethane resilient flooring is often marketed as bio-based polyurethane, because the polyurethane is synthesized by reacting isocyanates with plant-based polyols, such as castor oil. The resulting polymer is a polyurethane where about half of the inputs are derived from non-petrochemical sources, and the remaining half are likely derived from petrochemical sources.
Heterogeneous polyurethane resilient flooring consists of a wear layer, over a paper decor layer that is impregnated with polyurethane, over a layer of fiberglass reinforcement. Beneath the fiberglass layer are polyurethane core and backside layers. Some products also contain a fleece backing. Products may either be glued down or installed as a floating floor. This Common Product covers sheets and tiles that are glued to the subfloor. Adhesives may add additional hazards not considered by this Common Product. Homogeneous polyurethane sheet flooring and fluid-applied polyurethane flooring products are beyond the scope of this Common Product. For information on biobased polyurethane fluid-applied flooring products see the Biobased Fluid-Applied Resilient Flooring Common Product.
