Gypsum veneer base, or “blue board”, is similar to standard interior drywall, and like other types of drywall it is manufactured to comply with ASTM C1396. It typically contains blue-tinted paper on one side to differentiate it from other types of drywall, and is designed to be used as a substrate for the application of gypsum veneer plaster. The paper facing is treated to help the plaster adhere to it, and to maintain its strength after absorbing water from the plaster. There is little disclosure on the composition of these treatments, but patent literature indicates that the increased adhesion can be achieved through incorporation of gypsum in the face paper. 

Similar to other types of drywall, gypsum veneer base is available in Type X, Type C, and lightweight boards. Foil-backed products are also available for use on the interior face of exterior walls, where the foil functions as a vapor retarder.
