Vapor-permeable fluid-applied weather barriers are used to impede the flow of air and water into and out of buildings while allowing for the controlled passage of vapor. Barriers based on STPE, or silyl-terminated polyethers, are single-component, high-solids liquids that are spray- or roll-applied and cure to form an elastomeric membrane. Used primarily in commercial construction, they may be applied over various substrates including masonry, poured and precast walls, plywood, lumber, and gypsum sheeting. Some specialty formulations include halogenated flame retardants, but this was not found to be common in general.
