Waterborne penetrating wood sealers are used as an undercoat on wood products, including engineered wood products like glulam, NLT, CLT, and DLT. Sealers are used to control moisture content and protect against UV and microbial degradation. They penetrate wood by flowing into wood cells at the surface that have been cut or by absorbing into the cell wall itself. Alkyd resins modified to make them miscible in water are used in waterborne formulations, which differ from traditional alkyd finishes that rely on solvent carriers. Penetrating wood sealers are typically transparent and may be used as a first coat in a wood finish system.
