Nail laminated timber, or NLT, is fabricated using nails to mechanically fasten dimensional lumber into panels. Panels may be built in place or prefabricated for use as walls, floors, roofs, and elevator or stair shafts. Use and type of coatings such as end grain sealers, penetrating sealers, and finishes are dependent on specific project needs and are outside the scope of this CP. Plywood sheathing is commonly fastened to one side of NLT panels to provide diaphragm functionality. Lumber size, nail type, and nail spacing can vary. This CP characterizes a NLT panel made from 2x4 lumber and common 4" 20d nails spaced roughly 16" apart.
