More about Foil-backed Butyl Tape

In forced air heating and cooling systems, conditioned air is distributed using a duct system. Air leaks can occur at joints within the HVAC duct system. To prevent leakage, ducting can be sealed using a tape or wet-applied sealant. This CP describes a foil-backed butyl tape for indoor or outdoor use on metal ducts, glass fiber duct board, and flexible ducts, as well as on duct wrap vapor barriers. These products are commonly UL181B-FX listed. In order to meet fire-safety requirements, a mechanical fastener such as a strap, may be required along with the tape.
