In forced air heating and cooling systems, conditioned air is distributed using a duct system. Air leaks can occur at joints within the HVAC duct system. To prevent leakage, ducting can be sealed using a tape or a wet-applied sealant. This CP describes a water-based duct sealant for indoor or outdoor use on metal ducts, glass fiber duct board, and flexible ducts. Solvent-based duct sealant is available but is typically considered an industrial grade, not for residential applications. Duct sealant can either be smooth or fiber-reinforced, with the fiber-reinforced version described here. The products covered in this CP are UL listed, either UL181B-M or UL181A-M and B-M.
