Structural Bolts, Alloy Steel, Heat Treated, 150 ksi Minimum Tensile Strength. This CP evaluates a plain, unfinished assembly of bolt, washer and nut to be used for structural connections. ASTM A490 describes bolts used for structural connections with tensile strength between 150 and 173 ksi. Due to concerns about their making the steel brittle, ASTM A490 restricts the use of surface treatments. Two compositions of steel are provided in the standard. Type 1 bolts are most commonly used and are the focus of this CP, while Type 3 bolts are intended for applications where resistance to weathering is a concern.
