Most flooring products contain a finish, or topcoat that is applied to protect against wear and stains. These include PVC, linoleum, wood, cork, rubber, and PVC-free resilient flooring. The chemistry of the coatings varies, but most commonly consists of acrylated urethane polymers. The finish is typically factory applied as a water-based or solvent-based solution and then cured with ultraviolet light. The finish may include additional additives for scratch resistance such as aluminum oxide, diamond particles, or ceramic beads. Such additives were found to be optional, but may make up to 13% of the product by weight. These finishes are also used on non-flooring, factory finished wood, such as solid wood components used in cabinetry. Site-applied finishes are also available for some products, but are beyond the scope of this Common Product.
