Biodegradable felt from ovis aries (sheep) wool, provides functional versatility. Composed of a naturally based textile component with dyes for colored aesthetics and a surfactant; felt wool is primarily used for upholstery, and wall-coverings. Sheep's wool offers some sound absorption properties and can be used as a fabric finish on acoustical panels, or rarely as a panel core. Typically, several intermediate processing steps after required after the wool is shorn from the sheep. Natural occurring compounds such as keratin and lanolin provide sheep's wool with protection against odor causing bacteria as well as mold and mildew. Additionally, some dyes used to dye sheep's wool can require the use of hexavalent chromium compounds in the dyeing process and some dyes may contain PFAS. Fabrics and panels may include petrochemical polymers as binders or to impart elasticity or other properties, but this CP focused on a felt made from only natural sheep's wool that has been dyed. Lastly, sheep's wool may be used in stretched-fabric and fabric-wrapped acoustical systems. It may also be laminated to the face of a rigid substrate such as fiberglass or recycled PET. These installation methods will add additional hazards not considered in this Common Product.
