Like solventborne alkyd primers, waterborne alkyd primers serve as all-purpose undercoats for interior and exterior surfaces such as woodwork, drywall, masonry, and some metals. The waterborne formulation provides similar desirable properties of traditional solventborne alkyd coatings such as durability, hardness, and quick dry time, with considerably less VOC content (often <50 g/l). The primers are comprised of alkyd resins, water, pigments, and additives. There are various methods of making alkyds that are miscible in water including modifying the alkyd polymers (e.g. acrylic alkyds), attaching hydrophilic sites to the alkyd polymer as in water-reducible alkyds, and creating alkyd dispersions. This CP focuses on alkyd dispersions in which the hydrophobic alkyd resin is dispersed in water via physical processes and the addition of surfactants. Products reviewed for this CP were generally white interior/exterior all-purpose waterborne alkyd primers.
