Alkyd primers are used as all-purpose undercoats for interior and exterior surfaces such as woodwork, drywall, masonry, and some metals. They are particularly useful for stain-blocking and sealing and in most cases may be used with a variety of topcoats including water-based paints. The primers are comprised of alkyd resins, organic solvents, pigments, and additives. The basic inputs to an alkyd resin are polyols, polybasic acids/anhydrides, and fatty acids most commonly derived from vegetable oils. The resulting alkyd polymers may be modified with, for example, urethanes, styrene, and acrylates to impart additional properties. Some alkyds may be modified so as to be waterborne; while waterborne alkyd paints and primers may be preferred for their lower odor and VOC emissions, this CP covers solvent-based formulations.
