Self-adhering sheet waterproofing membranes provide a moisture barrier for building materials and are well-suited for below-grade applications such as foundations. They may also be used for waterproofing decks, roofs, floors, and walls during construction. Though the membranes use a simple peel and stick application, use of a wet-applied primer or adhesive on concrete substrates is still required to bind dust and create a tacky surface for improved adhesion. Primers may be rolled, brushed, or sprayed onto cured, dry concrete and allowed to dry before membrane adhesion. This CP covers water-based primers which are common in below-grade applications, though solvent-based primers are also available. Water-based primers are generally suitable for applications with ambient and surface temperatures at or above 40 degrees F. Lower-temperature applications may require the use of solvent-based primers.
